JOB SUMMARY —Extracorporeal Membranous Oxygenation (ECMO) Service
Tampa General Hospital seeks a skilled Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA) with specialized experience in cardiac critical care to support its ECMO Service Line. This role focuses on providing comprehensive care to ECMO patients, emphasizing health promotion, disease prevention, and management of acute and chronic conditions. The APP will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to deliver exceptional care and contribute to advancing the ECMO program. The APP will have an opportunity to practice autonomously and collaboratively within their established scope. All TGH team members are responsible for performing job duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values in accordance with Tampa General Hospital.
RESPONSIBILITIES —ECMO Service
- Provide comprehensive care to ECMO patients, including initial assessments, care plan development, and adjustment of ECMO settings based on clinical indicators.
- Monitor ECMO parameters daily, troubleshoot issues, and respond to complications such as bleeding, clotting, and infection.
- Perform bedside procedures (e.g., arterial lines, central lines, cannulation assistance) in line with institutional guidelines.
- Partner with intensivists, perfusionists, and nursing staff to optimize patient outcomes.
- Act as a liaison between the healthcare team and patients’ families, providing education on ECMO therapy and addressing concerns.
- Utilize diagnostic tools and interpret lab results to guide patient care decisions.
- Requests, interprets and evaluates diagnostic and laboratory tests and takes appropriate actions as medically indicated in accordance with departmental protocols. Identifies and reports any specific signs and symptoms, problems or potential problems requiring further assessment, communication and/or intervention to promote positive outcomes.
· Works autonomously as well as in collaboration with a variety of individuals to diagnose and manage clients' health care problems.
TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES—ECMO SERVICE
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a provider in critical care (direct ECMO experience preferred).
- Strong knowledge of ECMO principles, including venovenous and venoarterial ECMO.
- Ability to perform advanced procedures such as arterial lines, central lines, and intubations (training provided if necessary).
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Proficiency in managing high-acuity patients and navigating high-stress environments.
· Demonstrates current knowledge and level of expertise utilizing evidence and theory-based practice, infection control standards and clinical evaluations in providing care to clients in clinic or hospital-based settings, as evidenced by following established protocols.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and electronic medical records (EMR) systems, preferably Epic
· Ability to multitask in a dynamic environment.
· Strong written and oral communication skills.
· Outstanding customer service and conflict resolution abilities.
