*Job Summary:| The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP)
Admissions Chair is an integral member of the MSTP leadership team. They are
responsible for overseeing all processes related to the screening,
interviewing, and recruitment of potential MSTP matriculants through the
annual admissions cycle. This cycle typically runs from September through May
with occasional meetings during other times in the academic year. The Chair
collaborates with the MSTP Director to develop policies with the aim of
ensuring that the MSTP consistently matriculates motivated, high-performing
applicants who are committed to research-focused careers. The Chair is a
member of the MSTP Executive Committee and serves as a voting member to
provide direction to the program at large. Key Responsibilities:
Admissions Committee meetings (30%): · Responsible for overseeing
all Admissions Committee meetings throughout the application cycle, which
include:o A committee charge meeting during the summer to establish
expectations for the upcoming admissions cycle.o Six two-hour post-interview
review sessions to select applicants for admissions offers and placement on
the alternate list.· Review relevant data prior to each meeting,
establishes an agenda, and communicates objectives and priorities to committee
members.· Ensure that the objectives of each committee meeting are
clear to committee members and that conversations remain productive and on
task to find consensus on admissions decisions.Interview day participation
(30%): · Participates in each of six MSTP interview days and ensures
that there is adequate coverage for all necessary activities. Participation
includes:o A 90-minute “flash talk” session during which applicants deliver
short summaries of significant research activities.o Four 30-minute 1:1
interviews.· Identify faculty to serve as substitute interviewers when
there is not adequate interview coverage from core committee
members.Admissions processes and procedures (15%): · Maintain the
MSTP Admissions policy and procedures handbook.· Recruit new faculty
and student members of the MSTP Admissions Committee annually.· Review
admissions policies and procedures annually in collaboration with the MSTP
Director, MSTP Program Manager, and Dean of Admissions in the School of
Medicine to identify opportunities to improve processes.· Understand
admissions policies and best practices and serves as a resource to committee
members for questions that arise throughout the admissions process;·
Must be familiar with key AMCAS admissions timelines and processes and
understands how these items integrate with program processes throughout the
application cycle.· Establish deadlines, meeting dates, and interview
days for the annual MSTP application cycle (in collaboration with the MSTP
Program Manager).Admissions data management, analysis, and presentation
(15%): · Maintain pertinent application, interviewing, and admissions
data (in collaboration with the MSTP Program Manager).· Periodically
develops summary reports and graphics to communicate pertinent admissions data
to program stakeholders;· Attend MSTP Executive Committee meetings to
provide regular updates on admissions trends and activities throughout the
application process;· Maintain historical admissions data to assist in
the development of reporting tables and narratives for MSTP grant applications
and progress reports.Applicant recruitment (10%): · May be asked to
participate in talks and workshops for prospective students about CU-MSTP.·
Utilize data collected from Admissions Committee meetings to establish
applicant rank orders for key process decisions such as interview invitations
and matriculation offers.· Confirm all interview invitations and
offers of admission in coordination with the School of Medicine admissions
team and the MSTP Director (including selection of alternate candidates for
offers of admission as needed).· Evaluate matriculation offers in the
context of class composition throughout the application process and uses this
information, in conjunction with data from committee meetings, to make
determinations on new offers of admission from the application alternate
list.· Serves as a resource to accepted applicants, working with the
MSTP Program Manager to address questions from prospective matriculants.·
Contribute input into the annual MSTP Second Look Weekend and works with the
student planning committee and Program Manager to ensure that Second Look
Weekend provides applicants with the best possible experience to inform their
decision-making process.
