About KCTV:
KCTV5 is the CBS affiliate serving the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Job Summary/Description:
KCTV 5 is looking for a Weekend Evening Anchor/MMJ who is as comfortable going live on a streaming desk as they are anchoring a traditional newscast. This role is built for a journalist who thinks in multiple platforms, someone who can deliver a broadcast package, produce a 60-second vertical explainer, and anchor a streaming update all in the same shift. If you believe local news should meet audiences where they are on broadcast, on streaming, and on social, this role is for you.
Duties/Responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):
• Anchor weekend evening newscasts with a focus on local impact, utility, and
community connection, delivering content that earns trust with audiences
across all age groups.
• Produce and present streaming desk updates between and outside of
traditional newscasts, providing live, real-time coverage of breaking news,
severe weather, and developing stories for audiences watching on connected TV
platforms (Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Smart TV apps, etc.).
• Report and shoot as a Multi-Media Journalist (MMJ), producing broadcast-
quality packages while simultaneously capturing vertical video assets for
social and streaming platforms.
• Build multi-platform story plans at the start of each shift, identifying the
broadcast output, the streaming update, and the platform-native social content
for each assigned story.
• Produce platform-native vertical video (50-60 seconds) for TikTok, Instagram
Reels, and YouTube Shorts that are more than just a cut-down from broadcast.
• Anchor or contribute to streaming-only content, including live breaking news
coverage, "what we know so far" explainers, and VOD segments designed for on-
demand viewing outside traditional newscast windows.
• Be our content and editorial leader on the weekends by engaging in story
selection and decision-making.
• Engage with audiences in comments and DMs on your stories, answering
questions and mining community feedback for follow-up story ideas.
• Participate in editorial meetings with a multi-platform mindset,
contributing platform assignments, digital deadlines, and story format
recommendations alongside traditional broadcast planning.
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Minimum 2 years of on-air experience in broadcast news as a reporter,
anchor, or MMJ.
• Demonstrated experience producing content natively for streaming and/or
social video platforms, including vertical video for TikTok, Instagram Reels,
or YouTube Shorts.
• Strong live anchoring/reporting skills with the ability to deliver calm,
credible, and conversational coverage during breaking news and/or severe
weather.
• Mobile journalism proficiency, ability to shoot, edit, and publish content
independently in the field, including vertical video capture with reuse across
platforms in mind.
• Understanding of audience behavior across platforms, including when and why
viewers turn to streaming vs. broadcast vs. social, and how to tailor content
accordingly.
• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field preferred,
or equivalent professional experience.
• Ability to work a weekend evening schedule, including holidays, and to pivot
quickly when breaking news or severe weather demands extended coverage across
all platforms.
