The MRI Tech performs complex diagnostic Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) procedures, as requested by a licensed physician. The MRI Tech produces high quality diagnostic images while providing excellent patient care.

General Functions:

  • Assures room is ready: equipment is operable; supplies, etc. are in place before patient enters room
  • Practices universal medical precautions
  • Keeps patient schedule and accommodates emergency and add-on patients when requested
  • Greets patients with courtesy and respect; introduces self; describes procedures, puts patients at ease
  • Checks patient histories – has patient sign screening forms
  • Respects rights of family members that are accompanying the patient
  • Releases patient with proper follow-up information
  • Keeps patient information confidential as per HIPAA guidelines.
  • Handles delicate situations (fetal demise, cancerous pathology, etc.) in a supportive and empathetic manner (“good bedside manner”)
  • Responds to requests and questions
  • Handles upset or irate individuals and informs supervisor of difficult situations
  • Remains aware of appointment delays and changes to schedules. Communicates to the appropriate person(s)
  • Checks referral for appropriate study. Calls referring physician when in doubt
  • Possesses knowledge on correct and appropriate studies to perform for the patient’s diagnosis
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of MRI system, computer, camera and other related components of the MR system
  • Possesses working knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and MR pathology
  • Understands anatomy so as to direct the beam (or appropriate imaging source) in the most effective manner
  • Monitors patient’s well being during scan; recognizes patient discomfort or medical problems and takes appropriate action
  • Completes required exams, including extra views
  • Sends studies to reading stations for radiologist review, if applicable
  • Archives studies to PACS/DICOM system, if applicable.
  • Complies with all issues related to Safety and Quality
  • Utilizes resources efficiently and effectively
  • Maintains safe environment as it relates to strong Magnetic Fields
  • Addresses patient population-specific needs (clinical)
  • Participates in Performance Improvement Activities

MINIMUM EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited school of MRI

PREFERRED EDUCATION: Associate degree in Allied Health or bachelor’s degree and certification in another clinical imaging field

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 6 months in Magnetic Resonance Imaging with supervised clinical experience. Possesses working knowledge of cross section anatomy and MR pathology.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: 2-5 years in MRI

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: Possession of American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiology or (ARMRIT) registry eligible according to ACR guidelines. Must be registered as a MR Technologist within one year post graduation of accredited school. If Registered with ARRT in ionizing radiation, must possess current Texas Medical Board (TMB) license.

PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: ARRT in MRI

REQUIRED COURSES/ COMPLETIONS (e.g., CPR): Must have active healthcare provider Basic Life Support on hire (ARC or AHA); however, must have AHA Healthcare Provider BLS within 60 days of hire.
