SUMMARY:
The Medical Assistant assists the medical staff with preparation of surgical patients by performance of routine and delegated duties according to standards and policies. The Medical Assistant takes vital signs, escorts patients to their designated area, cleans the work station areas and equipment, administers eye drops to patients, obtains blood glucose levels, and ensures a steady flow of patient turnover. The Medical Assistant will work closely with the nursing staff to provide excellent patient care.

- Assist and anticipate needs of nursing staff relating to patient care.
- Prepare the surgical patient for surgical and special procedures cases by:
- Obtaining vital signs
- Obtaining blood glucose levels when appropriate
- Administering eye drops to patient as ordered
- Cleaning patient equipment and areas as needed
- Escorting patients to their designated areas
- Stocking inventory in their assigned area
- Familiarize self with procedures performed.
- Understand how to prioritize patient needs.
- Knowledge of Medical Assistant Scope of Practice.
- Provide care based on the age-related needs of the patient with consideration of their developmental/psychosocial needs, environmental safety, educational needs, communication style, and level of understanding.
- Stock and clean environment between cases and at the end of schedule.
- Assist with turnover.
- Support staff to Physician, Nursing Staff, and OR Tech as DON sees fit.
- Assist with monthly and quarterly inventory counts.
- Assist with monthly outdate checks of supplies.
- Assist with intake of supplies, verifying with packing slips, and distributes to designated areas.
- Assist with supply reordering to designated par levels.
- Is cost consciousness when ordering supply and works within set budget.
- Transfer frozen sections to lab as necessary.
- Assist as directed in the delivery of emergency care.
- Maintain confidentiality of the patients’ records and protects the patients’ privacy.
- Participate in performance improvement program.
- Other duties as assigned by management.
