As a Senior Traffic Operations Engineer, P.E., you will bring deep technical expertise and leadership to support mid to large-scale transportation projects across Idaho, with a strong focus on traffic operations, signal systems, corridor performance, and transportation technology. This role serves as a technical lead and mentor, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and public agencies to deliver data-driven, efficient, and safe transportation solutions.
What are the core responsibilities for the role?
• Lead traffic operations analysis and studies for corridors, networks, and
complex intersections, including capacity analysis, signal timing strategy,
and operational performance evaluations
• Perform traffic simulation and modeling using tools such as Synchro,
SimTraffic, Vistro, Vissim, or Aimsun to evaluate and improve system
performance
• Serve as technical lead on mid to large scale traffic operations tasks,
ensuring quality control and alignment with MUTCD, AASHTO, ITD, and applicable
local agency standards
• Prepare traffic studies, technical reports, signal timing documentation, and
operational recommendations from project kickoff through implementation
• Support planning, design, and implementation of operational improvements in
coordination with design and ITS teams
• Coordinate and lead meetings with clients, including ITD, LHTAC, ACHD, and
local municipalities such as Boise, Nampa, Caldwell, and other Treasure Valley
agencies
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers, technicians, and support
staff to deliver successful transportation projects
• Manage assignments, workloads, and training or mentoring of traffic
operations staff
• Coordinate with other managers and discipline leads to share resources and
align project efforts
• Support business development, client relationships, and long-term program
delivery when applicable
Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies:
• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or
university
• Professional Engineering (PE) license required, with ability to obtain Idaho
PE within a reasonable timeframe if not currently licensed in Idaho
• PTOE (Professional Traffic Operations Engineer) certification preferred
• 10+ years of experience in traffic engineering with a strong emphasis on
operations and analysis
• Strong background in traffic operations, corridor performance evaluation,
and signal timing strategy
• Experience with traffic simulation and modeling tools such as Synchro,
SimTraffic, Vistro, Vissim, or Aimsun
• Experience developing signal timing and coordination plans; ITS or signal
system implementation experience is a plus
• Working knowledge of ITD and or ISPWC standards and operational practices
• Familiarity with local, regional, state, and federal guidelines and
operational criteria
• Experience leading technical teams and mentoring engineers
• Established relationships with ITD, ACHD, LHTAC, or local agencies preferred
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
• Proven ability to manage scope, schedule, and budgets
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and client focused
mindset
• Desire to grow professionally and help build and strengthen the traffic
operations team
