Environmental Manager

Position Summary
The Environmental Manager is responsible for overseeing environmental compliance programs with a strong emphasis on wastewater treatment operations within a pet food manufacturing facility. This role ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local environmental regulations relating to air, water, and land systems.
The position manages wastewater treatment processes, monitors environmental performance, and leads initiatives to reduce environmental impact and improve operational efficiency. The role partners closely with operations, maintenance, and leadership to address environmental risks and maintain regulatory compliance.
This position provides input into strategic planning and budgeting, resolves complex environmental issues, and serves as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Ensure full compliance with all environmental laws, regulations, permits, and corporate policies (EPA, state, and local requirements)
- Maintain and manage environmental programs related to air emissions, wastewater, stormwater, and solid waste
- Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies and inspections
- Oversee daily operations of the wastewater treatment system , ensuring proper function, efficiency, and compliance with discharge permits
- Monitor and analyze wastewater data, including flow rates, chemical usage, pH levels, BOD, COD, and other key parameters
- Ensure compliance with NPDES, pretreatment, or other applicable wastewater permits
- Coordinate maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of wastewater treatment equipment and processes
- Lead efforts to reduce water usage, improve treatment efficiency, and minimize environmental impact
- Prepare and submit all required environmental reports accurately and on time (including wastewater, air, and land reports)
- Maintain complete and organized environmental records for internal auditing and regulatory review
- Develop and submit annual environmental reports , including permit renewals and compliance certifications
- Assess environmental risks associated with plant operations and recommend corrective actions
- Identify opportunities to reduce waste, improve sustainability, and enhance operational performance
- Lead investigations and resolution of environmental incidents or non-compliance events
- Develop and deliver environmental and wastewater-related training for plant personnel
- Partner with operations and maintenance teams to ensure proper procedures are followed
- Provide environmental expertise during process changes, projects, and capital improvements
- Provide input into departmental budget, including wastewater operations and environmental programs
- Support capital planning related to environmental and wastewater system improvements
- Manage external vendors, laboratories, and environmental consultants as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
Education & Experience
- Bachelor 's degree in Environmental science, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field required
- 5+ years of experience in environmental compliance within a manufacturing environment
- Class A certification required
- Direct experience with wastewater treatment systems is strongly required (preferably in food or pet food manufacturing)
- Supervisory or leadership experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of environmental regulations (EPA, state, local)
- In-depth understanding of industrial wastewater treatment processes
- Familiarity with NPDES permits, pretreatment programs, and discharge compliance
- Ability to analyze environmental data and implement corrective actions
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in environmental reporting systems and Microsoft Office applications
