Responsibilities:
JOB SUMMARY
This position works under the general supervision of the Sleep Health Center Manager, Lead Technologist and the Medical Director to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. This may involve polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services or patient care and education. This position can perform the duties defined for a Polysomnography Technician and may provide supervision for other staff, if required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Collects, analyzes and integrates patient information in order to identify and meet the patient-specific needs, and to determine final testing parameters/ procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols. Completes and verifies documentation. Explains pre-testing, testing, and post-testing procedures to the patient
- Prepares and calibrates equipment for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments if necessary. Applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards. Performs appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments, if necessary. Performs positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting.
- Follows procedural protocols (such as MSLT’s or MWT), Parasomnia studies, PAP, oxygen titration etc. and collection of appropriate data. Follows “lights out” procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.) Follows “lights on” procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (repeats the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.)
- Performs polysomnography data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and make adjustments, if necessary. Documents routine observations including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure and significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of Polysomnography results. Scores sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines. Scores clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) according to center specific protocols. Generates accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data
- Implements appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.). Oversees and performs difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions. Complies with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control issues. Complies with the Board of Registered Polysomnography Technologist (BRPT) Standards of Conduct. Performs routine and complex equipment care and maintenance. Evaluates sleep study related equipment and inventory. Responds to study participant’s procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate information. Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
- High School Diploma or GED or Vocational/Specialized Training such as related coursework, seminars or certifications. Required
- Other / Certificate Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to an Associate's Degree with an emphasis in health care. Preferred
EXPERIENCE
- related experience Required
- 2 years Registered Polysmonography Technologist with 1 to 2 years’ experience in the field of sleep medicine. Preferred
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Certified Polysomnography Technologist - Certification Other Completion of the Certified Polysomongraphy Technologist (CPSGT) and board eligible for the Registered Polysomnography Technologist (RPSGT) Required
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) - Certification Basic Life Support Current certification in BLS training course C. Required
- Registered Polysomnographic Technologist - Certification Registered Polysmonographic Technologist Preferred
