Diversify and accelerate your career as a Professional Geotechnical Design, Construction, and Reporting Engineer with Canadian Natural’s Albian Mine Geotechnical Engineering and Design teams. Canadian Natural’s Geotechnical teams provide in-house technical, professional, and engineering leadership to support mining operations at the Albian Oil Sands asset.
This role is responsible for producing design, construction, and performance monitoring solutions for mine earth structures, including tailings containment dams, pit walls, waste dumps, and other civil infrastructure. The successful candidate is expected to progress into the role of Designer of Record and/or Engineer of Record, as described in the Alberta Dam and Canal Safety Directive.
- Job location: Calgary, Alberta or Fort McMurray, Alberta - Albian Oil Sands
- **Shift schedule: **
- Calgary: 5 x 2, 8-hour shift, Monday to Friday
- Albian: 4 x 3, 10-hour shift, Monday to Thursday
- Safety sensitive position: Yes

Key Accountabilities:
- Perform geotechnical engineering designs for mine earth structures, including tailings containment dams, pit walls, waste dumps, and other civil infrastructure
- Work as a Resident Engineer with the Engineer of Record and Designer of Record to support design, construction execution, performance monitoring, and assurance-focused site inspections, including survey checks, fill placement reviews, stakeholder engagement, and performance evaluations
- Prepare as-built records and performance reports for earth structures, communicate findings with stakeholders, and support the development of actions based on assessment results
- Plan, implement, and evaluate instrumentation drilling programs to monitor the performance of earth structures and pit wall slopes
- Prepare geotechnical engineering documentation to support regulatory authorization submissions and contribute to standards, procedures, guidelines, and governance programs within the Albian Dam Safety Management System
- Support surface water management planning and design, assess system performance, and integrate site infrastructure, including roads, ditches, and other utilities
What You Bring to the Role:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geological Engineering; a Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering is preferred
- Registration with APEGA, or eligibility for registration, is required
- 8+ years of design and construction experience in an operational or consulting environment; experience in oil sands mining is preferred
- Highly proficient with Microsoft Office tools, AutoCAD Civil 3D, GeoStudio, and other geotechnical engineering design and analysis software
