Alberta Land Surveyor / Articling Student

The Opportunity McElhanney Ltd. is looking for a commissioned Alberta Land Surveyor (ALS) with extensive experience to join our team in Grande Prairie, Alberta, as a Land Surveyor. We also welcome applications from registered articling students who are actively progressing toward their ALS designation and are nearing completion. The successful candidate will lead a variety of interesting and challenging regional survey projects, including Crown land surveys, road and utility infrastructure surveys, topographic surveys, and construction and engineering layout. This role is well-suited to a self-driven professional with strong communication skills who enjoys both technical leadership and hands-on project delivery within an established multidisciplinary team. What You'll Do Working in a team setting to establish project scope, budget, schedule, and other project or client expectations. Leading survey crews on projects and communicating scope and scheduling information to team members. Managing project budgets and supporting financial reporting. Managing various survey project types including legal surveys, energy-focused projects, occasional land development (subdivisions), infrastructure, topographic surveys, engineering, and construction layout. Liaising with both internal (McElhanney) and external Project Managers and clients to ensure smooth project delivery. Managing information flow from field operations through to final deliverables. Providing mentorship, guidance, and training to support the development of junior staff and articling students. Ensuring quality assurance procedures are followed for proposals, field returns, drawings, legal plans, documents, and other deliverables. Providing technical and/or professional guidance on property and legal survey matters appropriate to experience and designation level. Other duties as required. What You'll Bring ALS (preferred) in good standing with ALSA, OR equivalent Canadian provincial land surveying commission with eligibility to obtain ALSA registration. Registered articling students actively progressing toward ALS designation and nearing completion will also be strongly considered. Candidates from other Canadian provinces with equivalent commissions may be considered, subject to eligibility for registration with the Alberta Land Surveyors Association (ALSA) upon relocation. 5+ years post-commission experience preferred, or equivalent progressive senior surveying experience. Strong background in energy, infrastructure, or legal surveying preferred. Demonstrated experience in project management, client coordination, and delivering survey projects on time and within budget. Strong ability to lead, develop, and motivate survey teams, with prior supervisory or mentoring experience considered an asset. Excellent communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. Proficiency with industry-standard surveying software (e.g., MicroSurvey, Trimble Business Center or equivalent). Willingness to travel for project work as required. Valid Class 5 driver's license. What Can We Offer You? The salary range for this position is $85,000 - $120,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual's education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications.
