Registered Nurse III -Per Diem

The Dr. John C. Corrigan Mental Health Center is seeking dedicated and compassionate individuals for the position of Registered Nurse III - per diem who desires a rewarding career making a difference in the lives of individuals. Our ideal candidate for this position will work with and assist other professional staff in providing day-to-day direct care to individuals on a 16-bed secured inpatient unit with serious and persistent mental illness, including monitoring patients, behaviors, providing direct care nursing care and patient teaching in regard to health and wellness, medication and illness management. The selected candidate will possess strong therapeutic interpersonal skills to encourage and motivate individuals in their recovery to work towards treatment goals.
Please note: Per-Diem Nurse must be available for (4) shifts per month, of which (2) are weekend shifts, and two (2) major holidays per year, one (1) summer (Memorial Day, Independence Day, or Labor Day) and one (1) winter holiday (Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Day).
Employees in this position will be required to perform mandatory overtime.
Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):
- Provide primary nursing care to an assigned group of patients utilizing the nursing process and following current standards of care.
- Transcribes / verifies all prescriber’s orders and works with pharmacy to obtain and administer medications and treatments, evaluating patient for effectiveness and or adverse effects in on-going communication with authorized prescriber.
- Meets patient’s nursing care needs as charge nurse or primary nurse by communicating key patient information to appropriate nursing staff in order to insure integration, coordination and continuity of patient care.
- Participates in admission, discharge, and transfer of patients as they occur. Completes admission nursing assessment and initial nursing care plan based on health and safety assessment by the end of the shift and assist in the creation on Individual Safety Plan for each patient admitted to the Inpatient unit.
- Functions as a member of multidisciplinary treatment team to establish a plan of patient care with both short- and long-term person-centered goals through consultations with other staff members. Gives and receives verbal reports between shifts and through daily written shift reports and progress notes to properly evaluate the needs of patients and staff.
- Provides and coordinates health teaching to patients and staff to increase the knowledge base of the staff and to maintain optimum level of health and functioning. Acts as a leader or co-leader of patient group meetings as assigned as part of unit active treatment schedule.
- Manages and supervises the nursing staff to include Mental Health Workers and Licensed Practical Nurses in the absence of a registered nurse of a higher grade. Monitor patient acuity, staffing levels and sick calls, hiring OT through established procedures to meet established staffing minimums in the absence of a registered nurse of a higher grade.
- Evaluates ongoing job performance of MHW’s and LPN’s and participates in the evaluation of employees by providing information to unit supervisor regarding job performance and training needs.
- Completes all written and electronic documentation requirements in a timely manner by the end of the shift. Reviews, co-signs and oversees completion of all progress notes written by Mental Health Workers daily to ensure compliance with facility standards and regulations.

Additional Information:
Per Diem positions are not eligible for benefits with the exception of earned sick leave in accordance with the MGL Chapter 149 Section 148C. Some provisions of the Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA) contract do apply.
