The
Assistant News Director is a senior newsroom leader
responsible for overseeing daily editorial operations, shaping long-term
strategy, and coaching journalists across the newsroom. This role ensures
excellence across all platforms including streaming, linear newscasts, mobile
and digital while driving innovation, growth and a culture of collaboration,
trust, and accountability.
This role is a deep consumer of news and knows
how to manage big breaking news, weather and large events every day. This
leader upholds the pillars of ethical journalism and believes in bold, dynamic
and original storytelling.
The Assistant News Director is an experienced
manager of journalists and large-scale projects. It is important this person
knows how to empower our team and hold them accountable to our high standards
of excellence.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Work
alongside News Director to direct daily coverage across linear, streaming, and
mobile platforms; uphold WFAA standards for accuracy, fairness, and impact;
provide coaching and feedback to elevate
storytelling.
• Manage workflows, staffing, and
schedules; serve as acting News Director as needed; ensure smooth multi-
platform coordination.
• Lead initiatives that
modernize newsroom processes, expand streaming and mobile reach, and explore
new storytelling formats while maintaining broadcast
excellence.
• Mentor and develop newsroom leaders;
foster a collaborative, prepared, and trust-driven culture; assist with
recruiting and onboarding talent aligned with WFAA
values.
• Align content strategy across linear,
streaming, and mobile platforms; champion investigative and community-focused
journalism; leverage audience insights to guide
decisions.
• Work across departments to execute high
impact community journalism
• Embrace an intense
pace of news consumption and output
• Take coaching
and feedback to earn trust in the
newsroom
• Prioritize content and newsroom assets to
guarantee superior coverage of stories that matter to the
community
• Recruit, hire and grow newsroom

CANDIDATE PROFILE

REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Five or more years of newsroom leadership experience in a major or large market.
- Proven success managing editorial operations, people, and multi-platform newsrooms.
- Strong background in producing and overseeing newscasts.
- Experience driving innovation, digital transformation, or streaming and mobile initiatives preferred.
