JOB DESCRIPTION

Performs highly advanced (senior level) administrative hearing work. The State Office of Administrative Hearings adjudicates a broad scope of state administrative proceedings ranging from complex utilities-rate cases to administrative drivers' license revocations, providing a forum independent of Texas regulatory agencies for resolving fact-specific disputes. Work involves presiding over administrative hearings, reviewing written records, and producing high-level legal drafting. May assign work for and supervise others. Works under minimal supervision with extensive latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

This position reports to the Austin office at 300 West 15th Street, Suite 504, Austin, Texas 78701.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Conducts hearings involving legal, procedural, and technical issues.

  • Schedules and presides over hearings.

  • Administers oaths, examines witnesses, and rules on evidence.

  • Rules on discovery disputes, scheduling requests, prehearing matters and motions.

  • Analyzes testimony and documentary evidence.

  • Prepares written proposals for decisions or final orders.

  • Researches statutes, regulations, rules, and case law thoroughly and accurately.

  • Prepares reports and legal documents using Microsoft products on a daily basis.

  • Maintains relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions.

  • Attends work regularly in compliance with agreed-upon work schedule.

  • Properly compiles and maintains evidence.

  • Ensures security and confidentiality of all sensitive and/or protected information.

  • Complies with all agency's policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity.

  • Performs related work as assigned.
