DPU:

The Department of Public Utilities (DPU) is the state agency responsible for overseeing investor-owned electric power, natural gas, and water companies in Massachusetts. It regulates the safety of bus companies, moving companies, transportation network companies, and oversees the safety of natural gas pipelines and the MBTA.

Job Description:

The intern will learn laws and regulations related to transportation, passenger safety and towing; how to investigate and resolve complaints; possible opportunity to assist with creation of new regulations., conduct hearing or do a ride- along with inspectors (depending upon intern's interests).

Job Duties:

  • Investigate and resolve consumer complaints; respond in writing and verbally to consumers

  • Review applications and issue orders granting a certificate to conduct business as a passenger carrier, tow company or moving company.

  • Create motor bus driver certificates

  • Assist conducting a rulemaking

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience or strong interest in consumer protection, or public safety, regulatory compliance

  • Excellent writing and attention to detail in editing documents

  • Good computer skills, Word and Excel

  • Ability to track complaints
