Licensed Orthotist Assistant - Fondren

Basic Responsibility

Design, measure, fit, and adapt orthopedic braces and appliances to patients with disabling conditions.

Specific Responsibilities

The specific responsibilities of the Orthotist encompass but are not limited to the following:

  • Examine, interview, and measure patients to determine their appliance needs and to identify factors that could affect appliance fit.
  • Fit, test, and evaluate devices on patients, and adjust for proper fit, function, and comfort.
  • Instruct patients in the use and care of orthoses.
  • Record patient medical histories.
  • Select materials and components to be used, based on device design.
  • Fabricate medical devices.
  • Design orthopedic devices based on physicians' prescriptions and examination and measurement of patients.
  • Confer with physicians to formulate specifications and prescriptions for orthotic devices.
  • Construct and fabricate appliances or supervise others constructing the appliances.
  • Train and supervise support staff, such as technicians.
  • Update skills and knowledge by attending conferences and seminars.
  • Repair, rebuild, and modify orthotic appliances.
  • Show and explain orthotic appliances to healthcare workers.
  • Research new ways to construct and use orthotic devices.
  • Establish and maintain constructive working relationships with patients, coworkers, doctors, managers, hospital staff and other individuals that you interact with at Fondren Orthopedic

Skills Required:

  • Proven working experience as a licensed certified orthotist
  • Knowledge of electronic medical records software and procedures
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office and patient management software
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and OSHA requirements
  • Physical Requirement: Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Minimum education and work experience requirement

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Candidate must be certified by the American Board of Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics. Must be licensed in the state of Texas to practice Orthotics by the Texas Board of Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics..

Reports to: Head of Orthotics

Supervises: None. Indirect supervision of technicians and medical assistants.
