Crossing Guard

at Mead Public Library


Under supervision of the Police Department's Sergeant of Administration, or any other Officer or Community Service Officer; provides safe crossing for children at various schools throughout the City of Sheboygan at locations approved by the Common Council in accordance with the general duties listed in Section 54-73 of the Ordinances.

1. Assist school children in the immediate vicinity of schools to cross intersections safely.

2. Influence and encourage school children to refrain from crossing public streets except at regular crossings.

3. Direct school children not to cross streets at such times when the presence of traffic renders such crossing unsafe.

4. Maintain an orderly movement of pedestrian and vehicular traffic consistent with the safety of the children attending school in the city.

5. Presents a professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer care.

6. Reports to the Traffic Sergeant any safety concerns at the School crossing they are assigned to.

1. Must over the age of 18 years of age, and a resident of the city.

2. Must have a valid Wisconsin Driver's License (Assignment may be some distance from their residence)

3. They shall receive compensation, as determined by the Common Council of the City.

4. Must be able to physically perform the crossings, including ability to work in all types of weather conditions.

5. Must be able to communicate verbally with adults and children they are assisting.

6. Must not have been convicted of any felony, misdemeanor or other offense, the circumstances of which substantially relate to the circumstance of the school crossing guard job, nor be subject to a pending criminal charge if the circumstances of the charge substantially relate to the circumstances of the school crossing guard job.

7. After being trained, to have knowledge of their powers and responsibilities under State Statutes related to School Crossing guards.

8. Have high sense of responsibility and initiative to work independently and productively without supervision and to work from oral and written communication.
