Together, we are building a sustainable future for local news.
KENS 5, the CBS affiliate in San
Antonio, Texas, is transforming the way we gather and present news
across linear and digital platforms, and we’re looking for a Senior Story Desk

the legacy digital and assignment desks. The SMD model ensures a single,
streamlined workflow for planning, producing and curating stories across
platforms.
The Senior Story Desk Editor takes
responsibility for setting editorial direction during an assigned daypart with
the goal of meeting audience expectations and executing on internal metrics
targets. This role is best served by a growing leader ready to take on
responsibility, coordinate resources and execute coverage plans.
You
will lead breaking news production, shape daily story planning, and curate
content across platforms. This position requires decisive editorial judgment,
strong writing skills, and the ability to thrive under tight deadlines. You
will collaborate with MSJs, producers and photojournalists to deliver
accurate, relevant and engaging stories that serve the community.
Responsibilities:
• Lead
a team of story desk editors during an assigned daypart, taking ownership of
breaking news, streaming and social media
coordination.
• Build newsroom coverage during
breaking news, ensuring accuracy, urgency and
balance
• Monitor developing stories and ensure
timely updates across all platforms
• Support
newscast and streaming coverage, including coordinating with producers and
reporters
• Help shape 24/7 coverage by identifying
follow-ups and advancing ongoing stories
• Create,
edit and publish content for digital platforms, including the website, mobile
app and streaming products
• Curate and optimize
content across broadcast, digital, streaming and social platforms during peak
audience periods
• Identify stories suited for
Instagram, YouTube Shorts, TikTok and other vertical
formats
• Write and edit compelling vertical video
headlines, descriptions and captions
• Repurpose
breaking and enterprise stories into vertical
formats
• Launch and manage livestreams as needed,
including routing sources, starting streams, writing descriptions and sending
alerts
• Enhance storytelling with creative elements
such as video, graphics, maps and audience-submitted
content
• Use audience data and performance metrics
to inform coverage decisions and improve reach and
engagement
• Communicate clearly with newsroom
leadership and the next shift to ensure smooth staffing
transitions
• Uphold our journalistic standards and
commitment to ethical, community-focused journalism across all
platforms
Requirements:
• 3-5
years of journalism experience in a local newsroom, digital production or
related role
• Prior experience leading newsroom
teams and/or demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with
peers
• Strong news judgment and the ability to make
fast, sound editorial decisions under
pressure
• Excellent writing and editing skills,
with the ability to produce accurate and compelling content
quickly
• Experience with newsroom systems and
content management tools
• Organizational skills to
manage competing priorities in a deadline-driven
environment
• A collaborative, solutions-focused
mindset that thrives in a team
environment
• Willingness to work early, late or
weekend shifts as assigned
• Remote availability on
assigned weekends during a regular on-call
rotation
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or
communications, or equivalent experience
