Transit Signal Test Engineer
at Modern Railway Systems
The Signal Test Engineer supports field testing, cutovers, startup, and commissioning activities for passenger rail projects. This role works closely with project teams to develop and execute test plans, troubleshoot field issues, review design documents, and help ensure systems are installed, tested, and commissioned safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project requirements. The ideal candidate brings strong technical judgment, adaptability, and hands-on field experience, with passenger rail experience preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
Test Plan Execution: Develops and supports test plans, procedures, and
phasing plans. Performs system testing tasks as part of assigned project
teams. Meet testing and project schedule deadlines.
System Validation: Perform field and lab testing, interlockings, and track
circuits. Reviews design documents and provide technical input.
Project/Field Requirements: Strong understanding of the project scope,
specifications, schedules, and testing requirements. Supports MRS field teams
and related service activities, as needed. Attend internal and customer
meetings as needed.
Commissioning Support: Provides support for installation, testing, with signal cutovers, startup, and commissioning activities. Provides input on design and engineering from project conception through final commissioning.
Documentation & Compliance: Complete detailed test reports and verify systems align with AREMA and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) requirements.
Defect Troubleshooting: Supports troubleshooting, issue resolution, and
field verification during testing and commissioning.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field is preferred or equivalent industry experience.
REQUIREMENTS
- 5 years + of field testing, development, and installation experience required. Passenger rail experience preferred.
- Experience reading signal layout plans, interlocking schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Familiarity with vital and non-vital relay/microprocessor logic, audio frequency track circuits, and networking.
- Understanding of FRA and transit authority safety requirements.
- Works effectively both independently and as part of an integrated team.
- Promotes a positive, team-oriented work environment.
- Serves as a key member of the signal systems field-testing team.
- Demonstrates strong work ethic and communication skills both oral and written.
- Demonstrates strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to perform during peak workload periods.
- Willing to travel for several days at a time, as needed.
- Valid U.S. Driver’s License in good standing.
