Highway Maintenance Worker II - Heavy Equipment Operator (61033945)

Operates heavy equipment such as ditching tractor, excavator, motor grader,
and backhoe in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations.
Installs, constructs, and/or repairs sideline and cross line pipe, driveways,
catch basins, guardrails, bridges, sidewalks, and performs paving and right-
of-way clearing operations. Operates tandem and single-axle dump trucks with
trailers, and lowboy truck tractor for hauling material and transporting
equipment for maintenance and construction activities. Conducts daily
preventative maintenance activities on all crew equipment to ensure that
equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil (engine and
hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for
deterioration, tires are properly inflated, and ensures no leakage is present.
Assists with performing or instructing crew members in safety practices such
as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job
site hazards. Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set
up a maintenance work zone according to SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual
and Field Guide. Assists in producing daily records of work performed and
materials used, records such as Highway Maintenance Management System (HMMS)
and the maintenance requests and complaint forms. Conducts safety inspection
on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance
program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and
to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Operates both
portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck
with snow plow attachment and sand / salt spreader to remove snow and ice from
highways and bridges. Assists in emergency and/or inclement weather
operations. May include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable
equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s
license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's
License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping,
reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and
grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods,
treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in
natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal
scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
