Position Overview
The Cost Accountant is responsible for analyzing, controlling, and reporting
product and operational costs across the business. The role supports
management decision-making through cost analysis, budgeting, variance
reporting, inventory valuation, and profitability assessments. The incumbent
will work closely with operations, manufacturing, procurement, and finance
teams to ensure accurate costing information and identify opportunities for
cost optimization and operational efficiency.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Cost Accounting & Analysis
- Plan, collect, and analyze cost data relating to raw materials, labor, inventory, overheads, and manufacturing activities.
- Maintain accurate standard costing models and ensure periodic review and updates.
- Analyze production and operational costs to identify trends, inefficiencies, and cost-saving opportunities.
- Perform detailed cost-benefit analyses to support business decisions and strategic initiatives.
- Monitor and report actual manufacturing costs against standard costs.
Inventory & Manufacturing Accounting
- Support inventory valuation and cost allocation processes.
- Analyze inventory movements, stock adjustments, and obsolescence provisions.
- Review material consumption and production variances.
- Coordinate physical inventory counts and reconciliation activities.
- Ensure accurate costing of finished goods, work-in-progress, and raw materials.
Variance Analysis & Reporting
- Conduct monthly variance analysis covering:
- Material variances
- Labor variances
- Overhead variances
- Production yield variances
- Inventory variances
- Investigate significant cost fluctuations and provide recommendations to management.
- Prepare detailed financial and operational reports highlighting cost drivers and profitability trends.
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Support annual budgeting and forecasting activities.
- Develop cost models and financial projections for new and existing products.
- Assist management in evaluating pricing strategies and margin improvements.
- Monitor actual performance against budget and forecast targets.
Financial Accounting & Month-End Close
- Prepare and post journal entries related to manufacturing and operational costs.
- Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing activities.
- Reconcile cost-related balance sheet accounts.
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of financial records in accordance with accounting standards.
Product Costing & Profitability Analysis
- Develop and maintain product cost structures.
- Analyze profitability by product, customer, channel, and business unit.
- Evaluate the financial impact of changes in raw material prices, labor costs, and operational processes.
- Support pricing decisions through detailed margin and cost analysis.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Maintain and enhance cost accounting systems and methodologies.
- Ensure consistency and integrity of costing data within ERP systems.
- Identify opportunities for automation, process improvement, and stronger financial controls.
- Support implementation of new costing tools, reporting solutions, and best practices.
Audit & Compliance
- Assist with internal and external audits.
- Ensure compliance with corporate accounting policies and financial controls.
- Maintain adequate documentation supporting costing calculations and reconciliations.
- Support statutory and regulatory reporting requirements where applicable.
Key Success Measures
- Accuracy of product and inventory costing.
- Timely completion of month-end close activities.
- Reduction in cost variances and reporting errors.
- Quality and timeliness of management reports.
- Support provided for budgeting and forecasting processes.
- Successful completion of audit requirements.
- Identification and implementation of cost-saving initiatives.
Skills & Experience
· 3-7 years of experience in Cost Accounting, Manufacturing Accounting, or
Management Accounting. · Experience within manufacturing, engineering, FMCG,
pharmaceutical, or industrial sectors preferred. · Experience working with ERP
systems such as SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar. ·
Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written, an ·
Ability to develop strong and effective working relationship with internal and
external business stakeholders. · Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
(especially Excel)
