While our Commission Appeals Department is located in Austin, Texas, work can be performed from any city in Texas. Qualifying candidates must have a secure, dedicated workspace with internet service, the ability to maintain a reliable and consistent work schedule and be available for weekly meetings and group collaboration via Microsoft Teams during regular business hours.
TWC is not considering applications from individuals who require sponsorship for an employment visa, including those with H1B visas or those currently on student or postgraduate visas. You must be a Texas resident to work for the Texas Workforce Commission or willing to relocate to Texas.
Who We Are:
Texas Workforce Commission connects people with careers across the state.
Commission Appeals is a specialized department within TWC’s Office of General
Counsel, responsible for providing legal support in administrative cases that
fall under the jurisdiction of TWC’s three Governor-Appointed Commissioners.
Our team summarizes informal, administrative hearings and makes
recommendations for case resolution in cases involving Unemployment Benefits,
Wage Claims, and other programs as part of TWC’s mission to promote and
support the workforce system of Texas.
What You’ll Do:
The Associate Reviewing Attorney (Attorney I) performs entry-level to routine
(journey-level) legal work in a structured, predictable environment. TWC
provides detailed, comprehensive training and a supportive ramp-up period.
Once fully trained, you will manage a steady, largely independent workflow. In
this role, you will extract relevant facts from audio testimony and file
documents to draft concise written summaries and work product. ARAs work under
moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and
independent judgment.
You Will Be Trusted To:
-Manage a predictable caseload: Maintain a steady, consistent workflow to successfully process an assigned quota of cases each week.
-Analyze and summarize efficiently: Effectively incorporate relevant information from audio testimony and documentary evidence into concise written summaries.
-Apply the law accurately: Ensure that recommendations and prepared decisions conform to existing law—including the Texas Unemployment Compensation Act (TUCA) and Texas Payday law—as well as Commission precedent.
-Draft and review: Prepare legal summaries, decisions, and other documents applying laws and precedents related to programs administered by TWC.
-Conduct hearings: As needed, execute telephonic hearings in accordance with agency guidelines.
-Perform related duties as needed.
You Are a Great Fit With:
-A self-motivated, highly collaborative attitude with the ability to work independently while fostering a positive small-team environment.
-Demonstrated ability to efficiently identify and summarize relevant facts, apply logical analysis, and draft clear legal documents.
-A meticulous eye for detail, the ability to handle multiple priorities, and efficient legal drafting skills necessary to meet achievable weekly goals.
-Experience and/or knowledge of the Texas Unemployment Compensation Act and Texas Payday Law.
-Prior experience conducting informal, administrative hearings.
-Experience using Microsoft Word.
-Ability to adapt and willingness to learn.
You Qualify With:
- Graduation from an accredited law school approved by the American Bar
Association and admission to the State Bar of Texas.
What You’ll Earn:
-TWC is a Family-Friendly Certified Workplace.
-The salary is $6,304.75-$6,683.04 month.
-Benefits include medical insurance, sick leave, and vacation leave. State of Texas employees are eligible for a retirement benefit that also includes a 401K and 457 savings plan.
