Materials Movement Rail Technician

The Materials Movement Rail Technician s responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient movement of railcars, including spotting, switching, and loading/unloading materials. Working primarily in the railcar areas of the facility, this role partners with the Materials Movement and Extrusion teams to ensure seamless operations. In addition to performing railcar repairs and maintenance, the Lead provides daily work direction to the team, collaborates with cross-functional managers, and plays a key role in promoting safety, operational excellence, and team development.

Location: Sugar Land, TX

Hourly rate: $18.000

Shift: 6:00 AM - 2:00 PM, Monday - Friday

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provides daily guidance and work assignments to the Materials Movement Rail Technician team to ensure safe, timely, and efficient operations.

  • Facilitates communication between the rail team and managers across Warehouse, Extrusion, and Plant Operations.

  • Operates, maintains, and performs preventive maintenance on the “Rail King” locomotive.

  • Conducts railcar and boxcar inspections, applying current cleaning, repair, and maintenance procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory and company standards.

  • Ensures accurate completion of shipping/receiving paperwork, material inspection forms, and task/work orders.

  • Maintains current certifications and demonstrates familiarity with AAR and Texas Railroad Commission rules and regulations.

  • Performs basic railcar maintenance, cleaning, and repairs using hand tools and equipment.

  • Regularly repairs, maintains, and facilitates the use of Supersacks, Gaylord containers, and other resin containment vessels.

  • Interacts with inventory management systems to track inventory and materials with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Demonstrates leadership in promoting safe work practices in all areas of responsibility.

  • Supports customer relations by using strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to direct daily work for a team.

  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to solve problems and make decisions independently.

  • Proficiency with hand tools (e.g., pipe wrenches, pry bars, ratchets) for maintenance tasks.

  • Familiarity with inventory systems and attention to detail for accurate record-keeping.

  • Commitment to working safely in all types of weather conditions.

  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments while maintaining a positive and professional demeanor.

  • Bilingual in English and Vietnamese required.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Prior experience in warehousing, rail operations, or related fields preferred.

  • Welding experience is highly preferred.

  • Ability to read and write in English preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stoop for extended periods and move routinely from kneeling to standing positions.

  • Must be able to wear a respirator and pass a Fit Test.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Must be able to climb ladders and perform tasks at elevated heights.

  • Ability to work in confined spaces
