DFG:

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is the state agency responsible for conservation of the state's natural resources. DFG exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and natural communities, and provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public.

Job Description:

The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (DFW), seeks applicants for the position of Northern Forest Restoration Project Coordinator. The position is assigned to the DFW Western District office at 88 Old Windsor Road Dalton.

The Northern Forest Project area in Massachusetts includes the Berkshires, the northern portions of the Pioneer Valley, and northern Worcester County. The Restoration Project Coordinator will oversee implementation of the Windsor Brook Restoration Project in Windsor Massachusetts. In addition, the Restoration Project Coordinator will assist in the identification of development of restoration projects on Wildlife Management Areas in the Northern Forest region, working in partnership with the MassWildlife Western District office and Field Headquarters. The primary goal of this contract position is to increase resilience on MassWildlife owned lands in the region. Project identification and development will focus on aquatic restoration which will improve habitat and increase resiliency to extreme weather events.

This is a contract position that is funded through a US Fish and Wildlife Northern Forest IRA grant.

The estimated duration of this contract assignment is from October 1, 2026 through December 2027. Dates may change based on program need, funding, and or applicant availability. There are no benefits associated with these positions - except earned sick leave.

Primary job duty will be project oversight for the Windsor Brook Restoration project including

1. Working with contracted engineering and construction firms to ensure project completion by December 2027

2. Collecting baseline environmental assessments before work commences to establish pre-construction conditions

3. Ensure that permitting and construction are kept on schedule

4. Attend permitting meetings and communicate with community members and partner organizations

5. Work with the Division’s Outreach and Education program to highlight project success

6. Keep staff and partners informed of project status and through regular communication

Additional job duties related to restoration project development.

1. Identify restoration projects on Wildlife Management Areas in the Northern Forest Project area with focus on aquatic systems

2. Develop work plans and permitting needs to prepare projects for future funding

3. Develop a priority list of projects

4. Provide support for other Agency restoration projects in the Northern Forest Area

5. Other duties as assigned

The tasks associated with this position involve field work in forested settings including some remote locations. The incumbent must be able to traverse irregular and remote terrain in the presence of biting insects and ticks.

Daily working hours will not be the standard 9 am to 5 pm, and may include early morning, late evening and weekend work. Applicant must have their own transportation to travel to and from work. This position will be based out of the Western District Office but will be primarily remote with frequent in- person meetings. A state vehicle may be provided when available, but incumbent should have transportation to work sites. A current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s license or equivalent license from the state in which you reside is required.

Qualifications Required at Hire (List Knowledge, skills, and abilities)

• Previous experience with restoration projects and project management

• Understanding of the concepts of habitat restoration

• Experience working outdoors and alone

• Ability to work independently and accomplish tasks with limited supervision

• Experience with Massachusetts permitting included but not limited to the Wetland Protection Act

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, including Access, Excel, and Word

• Positive attitude, strong work ethic with great attention to detail, and a strong interest in natural resource management

Qualifications Acquired on the Job

• Increased knowledge of the above
• Knowledge of agency land protection and restoration priorities
• Knowledge of MassWildlife land holdings and resource protection efforts in the Northern Forest Region

License and/or Certification Requirements:

Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, or equivalent, and an acceptable driving record with the ability to travel to check stations and field sites during the duration of the position.
