The Senior Melter Spare supports melting department by maintaining and repairing critical furnace and related equipment to ensure safe, efficient production. This role is responsible for tasks such as cleaning and rebuilding tap holes and slag systems, maintaining ladles and runners, operating melt deck equipment, and ensuring proper measurements and conditions are met daily. The position requires a strong focus on safety, equipment reliability, and housekeeping, while assisting in various production duties as needed throughout the shift.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Follow all safety rules, procedures, and environmental requirements, including completing job-specific environmental training and promptly reporting any safety concerns.
  • Maintain required certifications and training, including lockout/tagout, confined space, and fall protection.
  • Perform manual labor tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs and operating tools such as chipping guns and rammers.
  • Clean and maintain slag and iron handling equipment, including bull ladles, tap holes, slag notches, and runners to ensure proper function and integrity.
  • Chip, repair, rebuild, and maintain tap holes, slag notches, and related components, ensuring correct measurements and daily inspection of high spots and slag areas.
  • Maintain the integrity and condition of the melt box, spout, and associated equipment.
  • Operate production equipment as needed, including tending the cupola, operating the bull ladle, or running the skip car throughout the shift.
  • Perform start-up and operational duties, such as lancing out the tap hole and supporting bottom drop activities as assigned.
  • Inspect and ensure proper working condition of tools and equipment, including chipping guns and gas hoses.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly melt deck and work area through good housekeeping practices.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned by the supervisor to support production and operational needs.

All rates are in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. An associate must be able to comprehend and perform all departmental tasks as outlined in Job Instructions and Work Instructions.

Minimum 1–2 years of relevant industrial, manufacturing, or foundry experience preferred.

Physical Demands :

Frequent walking, bending, standing, climbing, crouching, and squatting

Regular use of hands to handle tools and equipment.

Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 lbs., frequently up to 25 lbs., and occasionally up to 50 lbs. (with or without mechanical assistance).

Tolerance to work in high-heat, loud, dusty, and wet environments
