About the opportunity
Join QIAGEN's growing software engineering organisation in Cluj and help shape the future of software solutions that support healthcare and diagnostics worldwide. In this role, you will lead a talented team of engineers while remaining actively involved in technical design and development. Working closely with Product, UX, DevOps, Quality, and Regulatory teams, you will influence architectural decisions, drive engineering excellence, and deliver scalable cloud-based solutions that have a meaningful impact on patient outcomes.
Your tasks:
Technical Leadership & Hands-on Contribution
- Actively contribute to system design and implementation while owning and evolving the technical direction across architecture, design, and development, with a focus on code quality, scalability, security, and maintainability.
- Lead technical decision-making, manage technical debt, and drive engineering best practices including CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and performance optimisation.
Team Leadership & People Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team through regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development planning.
- Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, continuous improvement, and psychological safety that enables high team performance.
Delivery & Execution
- Own sprint planning, execution, and delivery commitments to ensure the predictable delivery of high-quality features aligned with the product roadmap.
- Identify, assess, and proactively manage risks, dependencies, and delivery bottlenecks to maintain delivery momentum.
Cross-functional Collaboration
- Partner closely with Product Management, UX, QA, DevOps, and Regulatory teams to drive alignment and successful product delivery.
- Translate product requirements into clear technical plans and execution strategies while providing technical input on roadmap planning and feasibility assessments.
Quality, Compliance & Reliability
- Champion quality-first engineering practices and design systems for reliability, scalability, and operational excellence.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory, security, and data protection requirements while driving incident management and continuous improvement initiatives.
Your profile:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.

Extensive experience in software engineering, including proven team leadership experience.

Strong hands-on expertise in Scala and Java with the ability to guide complex technical decisions.

Experience building and operating cloud-native applications on AWS and/or GCP.

Strong understanding of software architecture, distributed systems, engineering quality practices, and modern development methodologies.

Excellent communication and collaboration skills within international and distributed teams including fluent English language skills.

Experience in healthcare, life sciences, bioinformatics, regulated software environments, analytics platforms, React, Angular, or Vite is considered an advantage.
