Field Laborer - Asphalt Milling

Position Summary:
The Asphalt Milling Field Laborer performs physically demanding work to remove, replace, and repair asphalt surfaces, operating tools and equipment to prepare roads and parking lots. They maintain machinery, shovel, rake, and sweep milled surfaces, and ensure safety on-site. Key duties include operating milling machines, changing carbide teeth, and directing traffic.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Machine Operation & Maintenance: Load, transport, and operate asphalt milling machines, including, but not limited to, greasing, lubrication, inspection, and changing carbide "picks" (teeth).
  • Surface Preparation: Clean and sweep roadways, curbs, and gutters to prepare for paving.
  • Material Handling: Manually shovel, lift, and carry asphalt and construction materials.
  • Finishing Tasks: Rake, smooth, and compact asphalt to proper grade and thickness.
  • Job Site Safety: Set up traffic control devices, act as a flagger, and follow all safety protocols/OSHA regulations.
  • Cleanup: Clean up work areas, tools, and equipment upon job completion.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Ability to perform physical labor in a construction environment, including lifting heavy materials and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Basic knowledge of asphalt construction and paving processes is a plus but not required (training provided).
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to ensuring high-quality results.
  • Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills and ability to understand instructions from supervisors and team members.
  • Willingness to learn and take on new tasks as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in asphalt, construction, or manual labor roles is a plus.
  • Valid driver's license.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, carry, and move heavy materials and equipment, often up to 50 pounds or more.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, and walk for long periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
  • Stamina to perform repetitive tasks and manual labor over extended hours.

Work Environment:

  • Outdoor construction sites with exposure to weather conditions such as heat, rain, dust, and noise.
  • Full-time hours with potential overtime depending on project deadlines.
  • The role requires flexibility and willingness to work in various positions as needed.
