Field Laborer - Asphalt Paving

Position Summary:
The Asphalt Field Laborer is responsible for assisting with a variety of tasks
in the asphalt paving and construction process. This includes preparing
surfaces, handling materials, operating basic equipment, and ensuring that
asphalt paving projects are completed efficiently, safely, and to high-quality
standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with Surface Preparation: Clear and prepare job sites by removing debris, vegetation, and other obstacles from asphalt surfaces before paving begins.
- Material Handling: Assist in the loading, unloading, and transportation of materials such as asphalt, sand, gravel, and other materials needed for paving projects.
- Operate Basic Equipment: Assist in the operation of basic equipment such as shovels, rakes, tampers, and other hand tools to help spread, level, and compact asphalt.
- Assist in Asphalt Paving Operations: Work alongside paving crews to spread and level asphalt, ensuring the surface is smooth and consistent.
- Monitor Quality Control: Assist in monitoring the quality of the asphalt as it is being applied to ensure proper thickness, texture, and smoothness.
- Ensure Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required. Follow safety procedures to prevent accidents or injuries on the job site.
- Clean and Maintain Tools and Equipment: Keep work areas and equipment clean and organized. Ensure tools and machinery are properly maintained and ready for use.
- Assist in Compaction and Sealcoating: Help with the compaction process by ensuring materials are properly compacted and assist in the application of sealcoat or other finishes as needed.
- Assist in Traffic Control: Set up and move traffic control devices such as cones, barricades, and warning signs to ensure a safe work environment for the crew and the public.
- Support Crew Members: Assist other workers and operators in completing tasks as needed. Be flexible and ready to assist wherever necessary to ensure the timely completion of the project.
- Report Progress and Issues: Keep the supervisor informed of any progress, delays, or issues that arise during the day.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Ability to perform physical labor in a construction environment, including lifting heavy materials and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Basic knowledge of asphalt construction and paving processes is a plus but not required (training provided).
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to ensuring high-quality results.
- Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
- Good communication skills and ability to understand instructions from supervisors and team members.
- Willingness to learn and take on new tasks as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in asphalt, construction, or manual labor roles is a plus.
- Valid driver's license.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift, carry, and move heavy materials and equipment, often up to 50 pounds or more.
- Ability to stand, kneel, bend, and walk for long periods.
- Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
- Stamina to perform repetitive tasks and manual labor over extended hours.
Work Environment:
- Outdoor construction sites with exposure to weather conditions such as heat, rain, dust, and noise.
- Full-time hours with potential overtime depending on project deadlines.
- The role requires flexibility and willingness to work in various positions as needed.
